Meet Carvana
Carvana Cloud is a distinguished attorney, a devoted survivor advocate, and a former Deputy Director of the Office of Community Affairs for the Houston Police Department, one of the nation's largest law enforcement agencies. She is now running for the esteemed position of Judge in the 488th District Court.
In addition to her impressive career in law enforcement and legal practice, Carvana has been an active participant in various community organizations and served on several boards, reflecting her commitment to community service and advocacy.
She currently holds the position of Chair of the Historical Preservation Committee as a board member of the Fourth Ward Redevelopment Authority. Carvana is also a dedicated board member of the Girl Scouts of America, San Jacinto Girl Scout Council, where she continues to support and empower young girls. Carvana's commitment to education is evident through her role as a board member of The Kinkaid School Alumni Association, where she works to strengthen the bonds between alumni and the school community.
Carvana previously served on the board of Crime Stoppers. Although she has since concluded her role with the organization, this experience underscores her extensive involvement in community affairs.
Carvana's legal journey began as a prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, where she embarked on a path dedicated to justice. Her most recent role was as the head of the Special Victims Bureau, overseeing the countywide prosecution of domestic violence and sexual assault crimes. In this capacity, she demonstrated her commitment to improving the lives of survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. As the Special Victims Bureau Chief, Carvana worked collaboratively with criminal justice experts and leaders in violence prevention to introduce pioneering initiatives. Notable among these are the Harris County Strangulation Taskforce, the Cultural Outreach Protective Order Program, and the county's inaugural domestic violence high-risk team. It's important to highlight that Carvana made history as the first African American female to serve in this influential role.
In 2019, driven by an unwavering commitment to reducing domestic violence and related homicides, Carvana co-founded Houston's Domestic Abuse Response Team (D.A.R.T.), a proprietary homicide prevention model designed to ensure the safety and justice of victims in high-risk domestic violence situations.
In April 2020, Carvana utilized her extensive litigation skills and violence prevention expertise to establish Community Empowerment Solutions (CES), a dynamic social justice think tank. CES envisions policy and programming aimed at enhancing the public health and safety of residents in disadvantaged communities across Texas. The think tank's work has been instrumental in shaping "The Empowered Survivor Project," a comprehensive restorative justice service response that prioritizes culturally specific advocacy and services to facilitate long-term healing and restoration.
As the founder of The Cloud Law Firm, Carvana practices family and immigration law. She is passionate about training and consulting on the importance of developing coordinated community responses to address systemic gaps and deficiencies that contribute to violence in communities.
Carvana is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., an organization dedicated to community service and sisterhood. Her service on the boards of The Kinkaid School Alumni Association and L.E.A.D. (Letting Everyone Achieve Dreams) further exemplifies her dedication to education and community betterment.
Carvana holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language from DePauw University and earned her Juris Doctorate from South Texas College of Law.
